4th Grade- Stitching Time

Our curriculum states that students are to create a quilt block and learn about the 3 layers. Well, last year I had this idea of well why not throw in another step and add stuffing to make a pillow. Lots of work but in the end, I have many stories that make me smile.
Students first learned about the history of quilting, and embroidery. They were asked to tell a story on one block and had to write a paragraph with their sketch. On the other side, they had a little artistic freedom. Students then used fabric markers which were donated by donorschoose.org to design their squares. I taught most of them in 3rd last year the basics of stitching. I was amazed at how some of them improved!

4th Clay Slab Project

Students were able to use stamps for imprinting. My dad made rolling pins using cut up PVC pipe. Just make sure at the teacher check point the handles are clay glued on. I also wrote a number on the bottom of each. I have 4, 4th grade classes this year.

Giacometti!

We looked at the artist Giacometti and created foil figures. Students added modeling clay for shoes to allow their figures to stand.

One student had the idea to stamp his own shoe design on the bottom of the clay.

From here we will draw Keith Haring's simplified figures.

Chuck Close

This was from my student teaching in 2007. Each student was given a small square and had to reproduce the same image onto a large square.
